Bishop Heber College is a religious minority educational
institution established by the Tiruchirappalli - Thanjavur
Diocese of the Church Of South India . The College traces
its origin back to Christian Fredrick Schwartz, the first
German missionary, who built the school in 1762. The school
became a First Grade College in 1882 and the first College
established in Tiruchirappalli , also known as Trichy. Then,
the College was recognized as Bishop Heber College in the
late 1920’s. In July 1968, the College was upgraded
to the degree standard with three degree courses viz History,
Economics and Mathematics. For the past years of existence,
the College has grown not only in strength but also in recognition
and academic excellence, thus, attracting students from
all over Tamil Nadu.
At present, the College offers eleven (11) undergraduate,
fourteen (14) postgraduate and two (2) post graduate diploma
courses of study besides research programs leading to M.Phil
and Ph.D. Moreover, the College runs the accredited Study
Center of the Indira Gandhi National Open University, New
Delhi. In fact, the National Assessment and Accreditation
Council granted a five-star status to the College on May
21, 2001. In addition, the University Grants Commission,
New Delhi & Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli
granted automated autonomy to the College during 2004-2005.
The College takes pride of its outstanding faculty and
modern facilities which include well-equipped laboratories.
It has a fully computerized library with a holding of about
72,410 books. Besides, the College runs a book bank with
standard textbooks and other reference books, which are
made available to poor students who cannot afford to buy
books for themselves. Furthermore, the College offers effective
Audio Visual Education Program on which films of educational
value are screened periodically for dynamic learning of
students.

Started by a group of dedicated Jesuits in 1912, the Loyola
College has continually nurtured the ideals of “Virtue
and Learning”, which foster not only a love for academic
excellence but also intellectual vigor, moral rectitude
and spiritual welfare of an individual. This hallmark has
upgraded the College to the top five institutions in the
League of Colleges in India. Indeed, the University Grants
Commission recognized it as a College with Potential for
Excellence in 2004. In addition, the NAAC accredited the
College at five-star status in 1999 and reaccredited it
at A+ level in 2006.
Loyola College enrolled its batch of seventy- five students
in 1925, with its course offering in English, Economics,
History and Mathematics. After a year, Chemistry and Physics
Departments were established in the College. The Department
of Chemistry has more than 42 scholars who obtained their
PhD in Co-ordination, Catalysis, Solid state, Photochemistry,
Bio-Inorganic, Proteins and Synthetic Organic Chemistry.
In the Physics Department, however, the areas of research
comprise of Solid State Physics, Growth and Characterization
of New Crystals, Non-linear optical activity, Organic Semiconductors,
Polymers, and Dielectric studies. Currently, there are more
than 7,000 students pursuing various disciplines that include
Computer Science, Visual Communication and Foreign Languages.
Loyola College boasts of its outstanding faculty and well-resourced
facilities. More than forty faculty members of the College
are contributing to leading scientific journals while some
are engaged in research projects for premier institutions
such as the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research
(CSIR). The College Library has a remarkable collection
of the most important books cited on its reading list through
the Dewey Decimal Classification.
Loyola houses the Entomology Research Institute which
is one of the countries top 10 places to study Biotechnology.
Furthermore, Loyola has a tie-up with numerous foreign universities
to offer vibrant exposure to students. Today, the Loyola
Institute of Frontier Energy is growing as a vital instrument
for the best scientific minds in India.

Stella Maris College, a Catholic institution of higher
education for women, is an autonomous College affiliated
to the University of Madras. The College which is under
the direction of the Society of the Franciscan Missionaries
of Mary commits itself to serve the economically weak and
the socially underprivileged students. Similarly, it practices
the ideals of truth and justice in all its endeavors.
Presently, the College has 13 undergraduate and 10 postgraduate
programs. Research programs such as MPhil and PhD and post

has reconstructed its system of education by introducing
the credit based system in 1997. With 19 well- structured

faculty steadily uphold the ideals and standards of the

The College was founded on August 15, 1947 with an enrolment
of only 32 students in the intermediate class. Now, the
College caters to over 3000 students housed in a large campus
known as “The Cloisters” in Cathedral Road,
Chennai.
